I Are Legend?
Amazon.com One of the most influential vampire novels of the 20th century, I Am Legend regularly appears on the "10 Best" lists of numerous critical studies of the horror genre. As Richard Matheson's third novel, it was first marketed as science fiction (for although written in 1954, the story takes place in a future 1976). A terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive have been transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Exce... [more]
I picked up I Am Legend from Amazon the other day. I was impatient and paid $3.99 to have Amazon overnight it to me. (Amazon Prime is such a guilty pleasure sometimes)
I had only heard of this book because of the Will Smith movie previews. From the movie trailer you can see that although Will Smith is the last man alive, there are indeed other creatures there and out to get him. I didn't know that they were vampires until reading the description of this book on Wikipedia.
Anyway, I Am Legend is absolutely brilliant. I enjoyed it more than World War Z. The book made me wish we'd have a real doomsday so I could experience everything Robert Neville (the protagonist) experiences.
My one complaint with the I Am Legend book is that only 170 pages are the I Am Legend story. The other 150 pages are other short stories. I would have been fine with this if only someone had warned me ahead of time! I saw no indication of this fact on the Amazon page, on Wikipedia or anywhere else. It is talked about in a few of the Amazon reviews.
I've read 3 of the other short stories so far and they are pretty good... very Twilight Zone-esque.
I am looking forward to the movie. I am a big fan of the Fresh Prince and I think the NYC setting will make for many interesting plot elements. The book has been made into movies 3 other times, so I may add those to my Netflix queue to enjoy after the Will Smith vehicle is released.

First up, "better than World War Z" means this one goes on my wish list. |

I'm also considering Amazon Prime...the free two day shipping and 3.99 overnight would probably pay for itself within what, 6 purchases?
